As part of its Screen Summit industry programming and based on a soon-to-be published comprehensive survey on public policy and film restoration practices, the CFI’s International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO), with Telefilm Canada and the French Embassy in Canada gathered Canadian and international film archivists, distributors, exhibitors, and streaming services to discuss the current state of our endangered cinematic heritage. Celebrating recent restorations of classic films with case studies and special screenings, this one-day conference also hosted panel discussions on ways to increase the accessibility of this heritage to audiences worldwide.

Presented by its author, Bruno Boëz, for "SAVE AS,” the study Lumière sur le cinéma de patrimoine canadien (New Light on Canadian Heritage Film) is the first of its kind, based on interviews with 250 professionals. It provides an overview of the network of players involved in the conservation and dissemination of Canadian film heritage. It also makes several recommendations to strengthen the accessibility of this heritage and the interest of Canadian audiences. An interactive map of the distribution sites identified across the country will be presented, as well as the main lessons learned and recommendations for increasing the visibility of Canadian heritage cinema. The major axes of development will be put into perspective through dialogue with Canadian professionals in the distribution sector and with the CNC, which has structured a network in France to support the distribution of heritage films. New Light on Canadian Heritage Film

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022, Mireille Dansereau’s ground-breaking independent experimental feature drama LA VIE RÊVÉE (1972) has been meticulously restored by Quebecor’s Eléphant: memory of Québec cinema initiative. This case study will examine the process by which this film came to be selected, restored and given a new life in the global streaming universe. The film’s writer and director Mireille Dansereau and Dominique Dugas, Executive Director of Éléphant will revisit the journey in a conversation moderated by Paulina Abarca-Cantin, Programming Lead for the CMF’s Encore+ YouTube channel.

Case Study Canada: LA VIE RÊVÉE (1972)

This case study will examine the exquisite restoration of LE CERCLE ROUGE (THE RED CIRCLE) Jean-Pierre Melville’s classic 1970 crime thriller starring French film legends Alain Delon and Yves Montand. StudioCanal’s Pauline Saint-Hilaire (Head of International Library Sales) and Jean-Pierre Boiget (EVP Distribution Services & IT) will explain how this film was chosen and the processes of its restoration. They will also discuss how the film, more than five decades after its initial release, re-entered international distribution.

Case Study France:  LE CERCLE ROUGE (1970)

This international panel will address similar issues to the Canadian panel in a more global context: what films are being preserved and restored, and by whom? Panelists will also focus on their active and ongoing work to develop and promote international distribution and exhibition – at festivals, in cinemas, and via online streaming platforms – of heritage or ‘classic’ films from all over the world.
